The headline speaks for itself. As the Catholic Worker Movement has its roots in the USA, the number of houses of hospitality and CW-members is way smaller here in Europe. Nevertheless there are also houses, farms, cafés & soup kitchens run by Catholic Workers in Hamburg (Brot & Rosen), Dortmund (KANA soup kitchen), Belgium, London (The Catholic Worker Farm, Giuseppe Conlon House, Mary House, Dorothy Day Café) and of course us in Amsterdam (Jeanette Noel Huis).
Once a year there's a collective gathering which took part in London this year. Well, "Cudham" is the more precise description, which is located round 25km from Charing Cross in a remote, one would say idyllic, environment. Lots of badgers and every-evening bonfires guided us through a very well structured program. I met lots of inspiring people, read many inspiring books and had a little inspiring wine.
The most important thing for me was, on the one hand, getting to know all the faces behind the heroic stories Frits has always been telling and on the other, the feeling of community. Because when I watch the news or even only watch people around me, and I feel that things in our world are just going incredibly wrong, it happens that I feel a little alone with that. To meet people who have been fighting for peace and against injustice all of their lives is so good to see.
In the following some pictures to describe the last 5 days.
Some of you have been asking me for the Y.M.C.A Catholic Worker - version - lyrics. They can be downloaded here:
