"Human beings are strange animals"

That's a quote by a lady, who has lost big parts of her family in the extermination camp of Sobibor, back in the 1940s.

Background was a "Coming to Justice" seminar, that all the ASF-volunteers did together last week at the Anne Frank House. Besides there were some young people from the Netherlands, the Ukraine, the US and Spain, who also participated. As the topic of the seminar suggests, was it all about approaching the complex term of "justice" from different angles.

The 4-day seminar began with a tour through the Anne Frank House and topics around the Second World War as well as and discussions about "guilt" and "responsibility" and the Nuremberg trials. The next day we slowly went over to the war in former Yugoslavia (1991 - 1995) and the genocide in Srbrenica. One of the girls that led the workshop, is from Croatia herself and was round 10 years old, when the war broke out. Her stories were very touching and her strengh admirable.
The following day we went to the ICTY (International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia) to see the trial of Radovan Karadžić.

What it feels like to sit only 3 meters away from a man, who is responsible of the dead of thousands of people, is barely describable.

All in all it was an intense, moving and challenging seminar, which clearly was very emotional to most of the participants. I am truly thankful that I was allowed to be part of such a program and such an awesome group of people, who are convinced that human rights aren't only some sentences on a piece of paper. Who are stiving to make this world a better place, in no matter which way.
I learned a lot in these four days, among others to see things more differentiated. And most important I learned to see the human being behind the mass murderer.

Short note

As you might have noticed, i have decided to write my blogposts in English from now on.
This is due to several requests and to the fact that half of this blog's visitors aren't from Germany (yes, I can see who stalks me ;)
I thought about a bilingual solution but that's just too much work. I hope everyone's okay with that.

Lots of love,
Caro

Europe Catholic Worker Gathering - London

The headline speaks for itself.
As the Catholic Worker Movement has its roots in the USA, the number of houses of hospitality and CW-members is way smaller here in Europe. Nevertheless there are also houses, farms, cafés & soup kitchens run by Catholic Workers in Hamburg (Brot & Rosen), Dortmund (KANA soup kitchen), Belgium, London (The Catholic Worker Farm, Giuseppe Conlon House, Mary House, Dorothy Day Café) and of course us in Amsterdam (Jeanette Noel Huis).

Once a year there's a collective gathering which took part in London this year. Well, "Cudham" is the more precise description, which is located round 25km from Charing Cross in a remote, one would say idyllic, environment. Lots of badgers and every-evening bonfires guided us through a very well structured program. I met lots of inspiring people, read many inspiring books and had a little inspiring wine.

The most important thing for me was, on the one hand, getting to know all the faces behind the heroic stories Frits has always been telling and on the other, the feeling of community. Because when I watch the news or even only watch people around me, and I feel that things in our world are just going incredibly wrong, it happens that I feel a little alone with that. To meet people who have been fighting for peace and against injustice all of their lives is so good to see.

In the following some pictures to describe the last 5 days.

Some of you have been asking me for the Y.M.C.A Catholic Worker - version - lyrics. They can be downloaded here:

Ich bleibe - I will stay.

Alles Liebe,
ein Glückskind

The first song I've heard when I came to Amsterdam is not a musicially precious one but it is so true and totally describes my situation: "Aan de Amsterdamse grachten, heb ik heel mijn hart voor altijd verpand" - I've dedicated my heart to Amsterdam's canals forever.

When I left home 8,5 months ago to live one year in Amsterdam, I never wasted even one thought on staying here after this year.
But the months passed by way too fast and the end came nearer and nearer and with that my wish to stay became bigger and bigger. How short one year can be. And after that? Simply leave and go back again? Unimaginable.
What started as an idea two months ago, becomes reality now.

I will stay here, I'm going to stay in Amsterdam!
After I had started to concretely think about studying here and to search for different possibilities, I discovered Amsterdam University College and its Liberal Arts & Sciences program and I knew immediately, that this was exactly what I wanted.

Thus I applied two months after the deadline for one of the only 200 places at AUC. What seemed to be too good to be true in the beginning, is now reality. After a complex application process I got a place offered last week!

At this point a giant (!!!) Thank You to everyone who has made this possible - to all the people who wrote recommendations, who guided me through complicated scientific questions, who checked my essays, who brought my English to perfection, or who sent documents from Germany. I cannot thank you enough. Besides thanks to everyone who has kept encouraging me, while I barely could believe in an admission.
And thanks to everyone who has supported and supports me, while they'd rather like to see me "back home" again. You're the best!

And again I have the same feeling I've had some months ago, on my way to Amsterdam - the feeling of doing 100% the right thing. And that makes me endlessly happy.

And now, once the fear of "the end" has vanished, I can enjoy the last time here in Noelhuis even more.

I'm going to stop writing now, before the grin on my face becomes chronic.
With love,
the luckiest person on earth

If everyone shared

Up, up, up!
